It is not so much the coffee that makes the coffeehouse, but rather the house, more precisely, the atmosphere of the place. Writer Barbara Sternthal and photographer Harald Eisenberger travelled all over Europe to visit 30 of the most beautiful cafés and coffeehouses in Vienna, Paris and Rome, in Prague and Budapest, in Venice, Padua and Florence, in Amsterdam, Berlin, Salzburg and Munich, to talk to proprietors about their commitment to coffeehouse traditions and to document the sometimes tradition-honored and sometimes stylishly modern ambience of the places in atmospheric photos. Their book is like a slow-food manifesto, a visual and textual antidote against the unpleasureable logic of quick consumption that is so rampant today.
