Burgtheater-principal Matthias Hartmann has won Thomas Vinterberg over to create a sequel of his success-film "Festen/The celebration" for his stage. The premiere is on the 6th of March.
A son who blames his father of having abused him and his sister when they were children. A facade of a family breaking down. Long time unspoken things coming out at last. This was what despressed and at the same time fascinated the audience in Thomas Vinterberg´s film "Festen/The celebration", which won among others the special jury prize in Cannes. Many theatre-adaptions followed.
Now Vinterberg will bring a sequel to the stage of the Burgtheater Vienna, it is the first time that he creates a piece especially for a theatre. "The funeral" sets in 10 years after "Festen", when patriarch Helge has died, but is still haunting and bringing up conflicts among his family-members. Michael König plays dead Helge, Corinna Kirchhoff his wife, Martin Wuttke son Christian.
"The piece has become magnificent", says Hartmann. "Vinterberg is a man of great knowledge for art."
