2010 marked his 150th birthday and 2011 the centenary of Mahler’s death.
There are concert series of all of his symphonies or song cycles, scholars examine his influence on anything from art, politics, and religion to science or communications, there are “study days,” “birthday dinners,” documentaries, exhibitions, unveilings of statues, readings of his correspondence, a new rose variety in his name, and a memorial coin. Even the Wall Street Journal asked “Can There Be Too Much Mahler?” – implying that the answer is a resounding “No!” So, there’s the power of music for you!
