The Krems summer festival Glatt&Verkehrt is taking place for the 13th time this year.
No matter if they come from traditional folk music, jazz, classical music or the avant-garde—what connects the performing artists from all around the world that gather in the little town of Krems a.d. Donau for around two weeks each year is one common premise: the confrontation with their personal musical origins.
Roma tales with Köhlmeier
In mid-July the traditional Workshop for Musicians is again taking place at the Göttweig Monastery. On July 16 and 18 two densely programmed concert nights follow at the arcade courtyard of the Klangraum Krems Minorite Church (among others featuring KARL RITTER, MATTHIAS LOIBNER or JHIBARO RODRIGUEZ & CAYENASON).
On July 17 HARRI STOJKA and MICHAEL KÖHLMEIER are performing Roma music and Roma tales at Spitz Castle (in the course of the Spitz Marillenkirtag)—a night dedicated to the music of narration and the narrative of making music.
Main programme
The main programme at the Winzer Krems, Sandgrube 13 (July 22 – 26) is divided into five theme days:
- “WACHAU RENDEZVOUS”: As always, the festival is especially concerned about charming new impulses out of the Austrian music scene and about offering the stage to local projects (among others with a premiere of a concert installation by BERNHARD LANG and the TRACHTENKAPELLE ROSSATZ, or the East Tyrolean ensemble FRANUI).
- “HELSINKI: A Night In The Sunny North”—outstanding artists from this musically unbelievably rich city dealing with the traditional music of their home country.
- “BRAZIL: Rhythm Magicians & Dream Inventors”—among others featuring BENJAMIN TAUBKIN’s MODERNA TRADICAO which already thrilled the audience last year.
- “ETHIOPIA: The New Flower From Addis”: Within the past few years, Ethiopia has shifted into the focus of the world music community, both with remarkable archive work as well as through various dub or jazz musicians’ interest in the scene—we will certainly hear some new sounds (among others featuring DUB COLOSSUS & SINTAYEHU, EJIGAYEHU „GIGI“ SHIBABAW & BILL LASWELL).
- This year’s closing day “THE JOURNEY OF BALLADS” features musicians who create both new and timeless interpretations from the Anglo-American song repertoire (among others with Martin Simpson and Alela Diane).
