A new book is on the shelves that takes a rare look inside Austria’s private living spaces and tries to probe the stylistic proclivities of their owners.
“Austrian Style” features a trove of photographs in the fashion of home-design magazines (no one at home, no unmade beds…), which depict the rather in-ter-est-ing mix of historic and contemporary modern furnishings of upscale homes, both in urban and rural environments. The author discusses inner-city palaces, penthouses, lakeside villas, and the like; she visits, among others, renowned artists (such as Jakob Gasteiger and Erwin Wurm) and concludes that the “Austrian Style” is marked by a “spot-on mix of styles.” Which mostly means modern interiors interspersed with select period furniture (Biedermeier, Art Nouveau, etc.).
